Traverse time at Melbourne General Cemetery

Discover the rich history of Melbourne General Cemetery with our new self-guided walking tour. Traverse through time and learn about trends in monument design by visiting some of our notable interments. Plus learn about the significance of horticulture at cemeteries by visiting key sites, including some that are part of Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust's groundbreaking Project Cultivate.

The tour will be live for two months between June and July as a trial project. Designed to be completed at your own pace, the information within the tour is available as an audio recording or text.

At each stop learn about the notable interment and some history of monument design, or the impacts and challenges of different horticultural elements around the cemetery.

How to take the tour

To begin, visit the main walking tour page. Select ‘start’ to begin the tour.

You can also download the tour to use offline. While you have an internet connection, access the tour and select the ‘download’ button on the bottom left corner of the tour. You can bookmark this page to your home screen on a mobile device.

Each stop will have an audio recording and transcription of the information, followed with directions to the next stop. There will also be signs helping point the way around the site.

Please remember:

Melbourne General Cemetery is a working cemetery. Be respectful to anyone you encounter.

• Wear appropriate footwear; the tour is approximately 3km long.
• The route is mainly along the road of the cemetery - keep an eye and ear out for any vehicles.
• Prepare for the weather. There is limited coverage at Melbourne General Cemetery, so please plan ahead for rain or sun.
• Take the tour at your pace. If you need to pause the tour, you can do so, and return at any time within June and July.
