Sorrento Cemetery History

Established circa 1886, Sorrento Community Cemetery was formally appointed to the management of Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) on 12 December 2017.

Initially, the cemetery was divided into three sections, the Anglican, Presbyterian and Roman Catholic with the first burial taking place in 1886 in the Church of England Section. That first burial was John Darbyshire who, during a king tide, was marooned off the back beach on a rock later to be named Darby's Rock.

Notable Interments Include:

  • John Button - Federal Senator
  • Vin Heffernan - Member of the Legislative Assembly of Victoria
  • Sophie Heathcote - Actor
  • Dame Zara Bate - Wife of former Prime Minister of Australia Harold Holt
