Have your say

In addition to conducting the pilot planting at Melbourne General Cemetery, SMCT is undertaking longitudinal research to measure public sentiment regarding the horticultural future of Victorian cemeteries.

We want to know how our communities want to see, feel, visit and experience our historical cemetery spaces and will use this research to guide our long-term planning. We encourage you to have your say and complete the survey.

The Final Resting Place of Many Notable Victorians

Established in 1852, Melbourne General Cemetery was the first Victorian cemetery to be designed like a large public park. Today, it continues this tradition, offering visitors a place of reflection in the heart of Carlton. Along with the heritage listed GateHouse, there are 43 hectares (106 acres) of manicured gardens, providing seasonal colour against a Melbourne city backdrop.

The landscaped gardens create a private place of reflection year-round, thanks to a skilled team who work tirelessly to create a place of beauty and solace. To honour the promise and commemoration over many generations, Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) cares for the daily operations of Melbourne General Cemetery, reporting directly to the Victorian Minister for Health. SMCT is committed to supporting the community in honouring and celebrating their loved one as they choose.
