Remember to remember
This year, we understand that many Remembrance Day Services across Australia will be very different. That’s why RSL Victoria is asking all Australians to ‘remember to remember’ – to commit to pausing for just one minute to remember those who gave their lives in service to their country, those who returned home injured or ill, and those who bravely serve our country today.
RSL Victoria’s Annual State Remembrance Service is traditionally held each year at our Springvale War Cemetery on the Sunday before Remembrance Day. However, this year, as we are unable to gather together we invite you to enjoy their pre-filmed service that was broadcast on the RSL Victoria Facebook page on Sunday 8 November.
The Service pays tribute to all those who gave up so much for our futures, acknowledging the rich war heritage of Springvale War Cemetery. During the service Dr Robert Webster OAM, RSL Victoria State President laid a wreath on behalf of the RSL, reciting the Ode of Remembrance in memory of the fallen and those who have since passed on.
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.”
If you would like to learn more about our rich war heritage, receive a free copy of Victorian War Heritage: The Rich War History of Springvale War Cemetery and Springvale Botanical Cemetery here. This informative book is full of touching stories with details of daring and poignant acts of bravery. It is downloadable and free for the entire community.
Although Remembrance Day services look a little different this year, the role of the RSL in fostering commemoration and supporting veterans continues. This year physical poppy selling in contribution to the Poppy Appeal has been difficult for RSL volunteers. If you would like to support this generous appeal we encourage you to donate at poppyappeal.com.au and plant a poppy in your garden in honour of the service and sacrifice of those who have served our nation.
All funds raised going directly to supporting veterans and their families, providing specialist services like crisis accommodation and health and wellbeing programs to thousands of veterans.
We are incredibly proud of our partnership with RSL Victoria as we join together in honouring the lives of those who have served our country. To celebrate this partnership Café Vita et flores is offering all RSL members a special ‘buy one, get one free’ coffee deal. Show your RSL VIC membership card to receive a complimentary coffee when you purchase another at Café Vita et Flores - expiry 31 December 2020.
