Jarrad Schober, SMCT Operations Leader at Springvale Botanical Cemetery

Tell us about your role at SMCT (in a sentence or two)

I'm an Operations leader managing the burials team at Springvale Botanical Cemetery.

What was your first job?

I started working in a fish and chip shop when I was 13 years old. It was in Aspendale, where I grew up, and I got paid $14 a week!

What is the most important thing you’ve learnt throughout your career?

There are two things that come to mind. The first is that opportunities will come in time for the right person, so be patient. When they do come, don’t be afraid to take them on!

The second is to set measurable goals so that you can track progress, and always learn from your mistakes along your journey to achieving them.

What’s your number one work-related goal this year?

My number one goal is to ensure the safest possible work environment for my team and others. I think that safety should be the number one priority for any Operations team, so it’s always the first thing I think of when working with my colleagues.

What do you wish everyone knew about SMCT?

At times I wish I could explain to people who are unfamiliar with SMCT that it has so much to offer when it comes to personal development and opportunities. My journey at SMCT has helped me develop not only as a leader, but also as a person and I will always be grateful for that!

What would people be surprised to know about you?

Some say my secret talent is in interior design. While I know it’s unexpected, it is an interest of mine for sure.
