Celebrating our fathers – wherever we are
Celebrations and days of remembrance are bound to look a little different this year. Some of us are lucky enough to be close by our nearest and dearest, and others are further apart. For some, our loved ones are no longer with us - at these times, we remember them.
Wherever you are this Father’s Day, take a moment to remember the wonderful men and father figures in your life. Those special men that for so many of us, played the role of our everyday heroes. Here are some ideas of ways that you can honour your
everyday hero from near or far this Father’s Day.
Write a letter
Writing is a beautiful way to share your thoughts and feelings. Write a letter and share it with your with dad or father figure, either in presence or spirit, to help to express your feelings and bring you closer. Say the things you always wanted to say. Keep the letter with you or throw it away - it is the process that counts.
Share a memory
Use the day to tell stories about your father to friends and family. Memories can make you laugh and cry, but are always a lovely way to remember those moments in life together. You can also share the memories with us, either through our service or sharing on our social media channels.
Participate in a meaningful activity in their honour
Perhaps the fondest memories of your dad involve gardening, or repairing something in the garage, or cooking up a storm – spend the day doing an activity in their honour. It will make them smile, no matter where they are.
Light a candle
The simple act of lighting a candle can be a very spiritual way to honour your dad, and other dads of the world past and present. There are also many other ways to express our love in a spiritual way such as filling a vase of flowers in their honour, saying a prayer, or playing their favourite song.
Read a poem, quote or book
If you are having trouble finding the words, you can always call on the beautiful words of others to help you honour the memories of your father. Sometimes the words are already so well said, it’s just a matter of finding them and sharing them.
Here are some special words to help you to hold your father in your heart this Father’s Day.
“There’s A Special Place In My Heart for Him” by Unknown - Poem
“There’s a special kind of feeling
When I think about you, Dad
It’s a pleasure to remember
All the happy times we’ve had
There’s a special kind of caring
That is meant for you alone
There’s a place somewhere
Within my heart
That only you can own
Missing you always,
Happy Father’s Day.”
