Our History at SMCT

History of SMCT

In July 2008, the State Government announced reforms to the 14 major metropolitan and regional cemetery Trusts that reported to Parliament under the Financial Management Act 1994. These reforms enacted as amendments to the original Cemeteries & Crematoria Act 2003.

On 28 February 2010, Ten of the fourteen Trusts were consolidated into two primary metropolitan cemetery Trusts. These both commencing on the 1 March 2010 as the Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) and the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT). The changes primarily affected Trusts in the metropolitan area.

Today, SMCT is a not-for-profit community-based organisation that administers and cares for the nine cemetery locations, each with a rich history of its own.

Our Historical Restoration and Refurbishment Fund supports our role as custodians of history, providing essential funds to the restoration of historically and culturally significant monuments under our care.
