SMCT Master Plan

The Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) manages multiple cemeteries, reporting to the Victorian Government. The purpose of the Master Plan is to provide direction for all cemeteries, and set priorities for the organisation to ensure:
The needs of the community continue to be met, offering choice, flexibility and value for end-of-life products and services
Cemetery sites are optimised to meet demand and provide a welcoming and accessible spaces for public use
Environmental initiatives are delivered to the highest possible standards
Heritage and conservation responsibilities are met to ensure assets can continue to be enjoyed by future generations
Key initiatives scheduled for delivery over the life of the Master Plan include:
- Development of Botanical Hill at Springvale Botanic Cemetery
- Development of the Bunurong wetlands area, enhancing the natural environment and increasing the habitat for local wildlife
- Reducing our carbon footprint including the rollout of solar energy initiatives, switching from gas to renewables, and improved water and waste management
- Project Cultivate, planting native plants and grasses to revitalise cemetery sites to establish a biodiverse environment that can be sustainably maintained
The Master Plan should be considered as a living document and will be reviewed and updated periodically to ensure SMCT continues to meet the evolving needs of the community and the environment.
