Cremation Options

In Australia, many people now choose cremation over other burial options.

Cremation offers people many ways of honouring their loved one. This could be through the scattering of their ashes somewhere that means something to them, being able to keep them in their homes, or even having their ashes turned into jewellery and treasured that way.

A benefit of cremation is that you don’t immediately need to decide how you will honour the life of your loved one after they are cremated. On this page, we discuss some of the options available for those who choose cremation - but they can be choices to make now, or years in the future. It's up to you.

Cremation memorial services

Bringing people family and friends together to honour and celebrate the life of a loved one after a cremation is an opportunity for a personalised and meaningful tribute.

There are many options when it comes to cremation memorial services. These can be held either in place of a traditional funeral - either with or without the support of a funeral director - or in the months or years following the cremation.

Scattering, burying and tribute options

If you have a loved one's ashes in your care, you may wish to scatter or inter them, or incorporate them into a memorial tribute to be cherished. There is no right or wrong way to do this - however you wish to remember your loved one, there is an option available to you. These options also apply regardless of when the cremation took place, so you can take the time you need to make a decision.

Please note that it is also possible to split ashes, allowing family members the ability to remember in ways that are meaningful to them. If you have a particular memorial option in mind that is not mentioned below, please contact our friendly team to discuss your options.

For SMCT customer Pam, acknowledging her late husband's wish to have his ashes scattered was crucial. But it was also important for her to have a place to visit to honour his memory.
