SMCT welcomes San Remo and Wonthaggi cemeteries and community

On 1 February 2025, San Remo and Wonthaggi Cemeteries will be voluntarily transferred to Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT).

SMCT supports this decision by the Victorian Government, and we look forward to welcoming two new cemeteries into our family of nine cemeteries and memorial parks.

We thank those who have worked to support the Bass Coast community at these sites over the years, and look forward to exploring a legacy of history, reflection and compassion. We continue to work closely community and stakeholders to understand their unique needs and to provide a seamless transition for families and the local community.

From 1 February 2025, all enquiries regarding existing or new burials, funerals and management of Wonthaggi or San Remo cemeteries will be directed to SMCT on 1300 466 904 or via email to enquiries@smct.org.au.

We will continue to provide support and continuity as part of the transfer process. We are available online and by phone seven days a week for guidance and advice, and will have a team member supporting on-site needs as appropriate on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Bass Coast Shire Council first approached SMCT about the possibility of a voluntary transfer in 2023. The Council formally endorsed commencing the statutory process to apply to the Minister for Health to facilitate the voluntary transfer. This process involved robust community consultation and mutual coordination between Bass Coast Shire Council and SMCT and has now been formally approved.
