A statement about mulch at SMCT – safe, clean, and meeting standards

The Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) is following the media conversation about contaminated mulches being identified in a number of public parks and gardens across Melbourne.

SMCT locations are not impacted by this issue, with the majority of our garden mulch, and mulch being used on large scale projects like Project Cultivate at Melbourne General Cemetery, created from onsite tree-lopping works, meaning it is free from contaminants.

Any garden mulch imported to our sites must meet strict Quality Assessment guidelines before being used.

Mulch for our playground locations is imported and is derived from 100% pine plantation woodchips rather than “recycled” material, and meets the rigorous guidelines set by the Australian Standard in terms of Playground Surfacing.
