Easing grieving by planning

“Our death is not an end if we can live on in our children and the younger generation. For they are us; our bodies are only wilted leaves on the tree of life.”

Albert Einstein

At SMCT, we honour and celebrate life. A part of this is also mourning, grieving and accepting losses. Our aim is to support our community before, during and after this process with information and resources.

The 8 August 2020 is Dying to Know Day. This initiative by The Ground Swell Project is designed to activate conversations and curiosity. By encouraging death literacy and providing a space to talk about end of life plans, they believe that it can help people, families and communities to do death better.

There are a few ways at SMCT that we support our community to gain knowledge and prepare with their families for this next stage of life.

The Centre of Care & Wellbeing

We are proud of the community that the Centre of Care & Wellbeing has established. We provide our families with compassion and care that transcends beyond the initial period of grief and into the period of mourning, regardless of how long that may take.

At the Centre for Care & Wellbeing, we share a lot of work by North America’s leading death educator, author and grief counsellor, Dr. Alan Wolfelt. He shares compassionate messages about healing in grief, based on his own personal losses as well as his professional experience supporting people of all ages over the last three decades. His approach can be beneficial in having conversations with our own families.

"Death ends a life, but only alters a relationship, moving it from one of presence to remembrance."

- Dr Alan Wolfelt

We have books by Dr. Alan Wolfelt and more authors on grieving and death to support loved ones in their journey available through the Centre of Care & Wellbeing.

Planning ahead

As we’ve mentioned above, this isn’t always an easy discussion but there are ways to start this process with your family and loved ones ahead of time. At SMCT, we are committed to guiding families through the most important, long term decisions they will need to make when someone dies.

Planning ahead will give you peace of mind, knowing that requests will be honoured, you'll be protected against future price increases and family members will be saved from making difficult decisions on your behalf. You can read more about planning ahead here.
