Spotlight on Shireen Jahan

Tell us about your role at SMCT.

My role as Chief Financial Officer looks after what is regarded as the backbone of the organisation – the central service function tasked with connecting strategy with finance and guaranteeing transparency when reporting throughout SMCT. I have the pleasure of leading teams that often don’t get their time in the spotlight unless something goes wrong, but are always working in the background to ensure we achieve the organisation's KPIs year after year.

What was your first job?

My first job was working for a large conglomerate company as a Business Analyst. This fast-paced and high-pressure introduction to the industry had me assessing data analytics in order to deliver recommendations and reports to the board on a regular basis.

What is the most important thing you've learnt throughout your career?

Always ask the why. It is vitally important that in business and in life, we understand the purpose of why we do things. As a leader I look to challenge the common misconception that we always need to know it all, instead encouraging a growth mindset and striving to never stop learning. I work with an extremely innovative and intelligent team so must always be willing to adapt in my current role.

What's your number one work-related goal this year?

My number one goal this year is to maximise SMCT’s sustainability result. This goes hand in hand with ensuring our investment fund is growing and we are consistently generating value for the business.

What do you wish everyone knew about SMCT?

I wish everyone knew just what a great commercial and purposed organisation we are. We are so far ahead of our industry in our thought processes and practices that we must look elsewhere for exceptional companies to benchmark against!

If you could switch jobs for a day with someone at SMCT, what role would you choose?

Michelle Stewart, our Events and Experience Manager! Among my friends and family, I am always the organiser of events, so I would love to spend a day in Michelle’s shoes.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I’m a bit of a news geek! To and from work you will catch me listening to 774 ABC Melbourne, while at home I’m likely to have settled in for the night with a good non-fiction book.

Bonus author recommendations if you enjoy developmental and psychological books like me: Ryan Holiday and Brene Brown.
