Ching Ming/Spring Offering Ceremony

This annual event is held at the Di Zhang Wang Temple located in the Song He Yuan area of Springvale Botanical Cemetery. The ceremony is conducted by Master Ru Sun and arranged in conjunction with the Yun Yang Temple and Le Pine Funeral Services.

While this important Buddhist ceremony is celebrated in many cemeteries around the world, prior to 2005, it had never previously been conducted in an Australian cemetery. The service gives participants the opportunity to repay their debt of gratitude to their departed ancestors and resolve resentment between enemies and creditors. This is done by generating merits during the ceremony which are then passed on to ancestors, enemies and creditors.

Participants pre-registered their ancestor’s name which ensures they are included in the official service and bring  offerings and lit incense to invite their ancestor to the service. The ceremony lasts for approximately four hours and is an impressive display of colours, chanting and spiritualism.
