About SMCT

Honouring and Celebrating Life

The Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) is a community based, not-for-profit organisation, committed to serving the needs of our communities.

Formed in March 2010 under the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2003, SMCT is accountable to the Department of Health and administers Bunurong and Cheltenham Memorial Parks, Brighton General, Cheltenham Pioneer, Dandenong Community, Melbourne General, Springvale Botanical and St Kilda cemeteries.

As a not-for-profit organisation, the Trust is responsible for the care and long term maintenance of these eight distinctive cemetery locations. To ensure that the locations will be maintained for future generations, a percentage of revenue is allocated to a Preservation Fund. This fund ensures that resources will be available to maintain all eight cemeteries in perpetuity (for all time).

Over and above the funeral services we provide, we are committed to guiding families through the most important, long term decisions they will need to make when someone dies.

We also recognise our responsibilities as custodians of history.

Historic and iconic, the cemeteries and memorial parks within our care are beautiful, tranquil and distinctive destinations to honour and celebrate life.

What we do

SMCT cares for the needs of approximately 12,000 families each year across our eight
cemetery locations.

SMCT offers an extensive range of cremation, burial and mausolea options, allowing families to make the most appropriate decisions according to their personal, religious and cultural needs.

We provide guidance to the many families who wish to make arrangements ahead of time.
By organising their affairs and planning ahead, they have peace of mind knowing that requests will be honoured, locations secured and they will be protected against future price increases.

Planning ahead also saves family members from having to make difficult decisions at an emotional time.

SMCT is a leader within the cemetery industry and enjoys close working relationships with funeral directors and other industry partners. These relationships ensure that we are well positioned to continually meet the needs of the diverse communities that we serve.

Strategic Priorities

SMCT is focused on the future and has developed a five-year Strategic Plan with four overarching Strategic Priorities, which align our culture, vision and values.

Our Vision and Values

We will set the standard by providing our communities with world-class services and facilities across every aspect of our business.

Trust Members

A board of appointed Trust members oversees the strategic direction of SMCT and is responsible to the Minister for Health & Ageing, to ensure good governance of the cemeteries entrusted to its care.

Governance

The Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust recognises that strong governance and accountability are the cornerstones of effective and efficient management.

Environmental Responsibilities

The need to reduce carbon emissions and the consumption of non-renewable resources is emphasised and embedded in our workplace ethos at all levels of our organisation.

History of SMCT

The Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust was formed on 1 March 2010 as a result of State Government reforms to the major metropolitan and regional cemetery Trusts.

Publications

To enhance open communication between SMCT and all stakeholders, a variety of publications are produced on an annual and regular basis.
